A thriller ..a mystery..a creative mix of fiction and photography. A mysterious island with an abandoned orphanage (but is it really abandoned?) and a strange warp of time involving WWII is fantastically woven into a story that keeps you turning pages to see what happens next. Amazing new author. This is a young adult book But adults are reading it.

It's 1986 and Henry Lee witnesses a sight at the old Panama Hotel in Seattle shich has been boarded up since WWII. He sees the new owner carrying out boxes and boxes of personal belongings that were evacuated with Japanese families sent to internment camps during the war. Henry, who is Chinese, remembers his childhood, his Japanese friend Keiko and the bittersweet memories of growing up in that era. Good writing. I learned a lot about this time period.

Abraham Verghese has said that his goal in writing this novel was "to tell a great story, an old-fashioned truth-telling story" That is this novel which spans 50 years in the lives of an unusual family group. The cast of characters is an array of immigrants, doctors, children, the country of Ethiopia, all struggling with loss, divisions, growing up, love, reconciliation, and unity. This is an epic story(500+ pages) but worth your time. It might be the best novel I've read so far this year.
